The problem

A German automaker approached us with a request to design a product and develop the tool for it, which would make the installation of gaskets in the engine compartment—specifically for use with hollow screws and ring pieces - safer, simpler, and significantly faster.

Attaching individual sealing rings to ring sections on engines and associated piping in hard-to-reach areas costs the manufacturer a tremendous amount of time—in this case, 420 seconds. This conventional installation method also carried the risk that the rear of the two seals would not be installed correctly. This installation error would be noticed at the latest on the engine test bench, and the entire seal set would then have to be reinstalled—a “disaster” in terms of both time and installation technique.
The solution

Facius + Schober designed the twin ring. Two sealing rings connected in parallel by a bridge. This ensured that once the front ring was properly positioned over the ring section, the rear ring would automatically seat in the correct position and, thanks to the connection, could not fall off. This resulted in an 88.6% reduction in installation time and a significant reduction in installation errors. Facius + Schober supplies the twin ring as a single unit and also pre-assembled with a screw. The twin ring is particularly suitable for installations on engines in oil and fuel supply and return lines.

But we don’t just manufacture products—we also produce the necessary materials in-house. FESTAPLAN® is the first asbestos-free filler for metal gaskets and is manufactured by us. It consists of cellulose fibers and binders. FESTAPLAN® was primarily designed for use as a filler in metal gaskets. The material is characterized by good compressibility, resilience, and workability with minimal tool wear.
